Dream Big, Work Hard, Plug In: Morris Just Gave Entrepreneurs a Home MORRIS, AL — In a world where people pay $7 for iced coffee and think “grind” means posting Instagram quotes from the gym parking lot, something actually useful just happened.
They quietly opened the North Jefferson Innovation Center—a real place, with real people, doing real things. Located off Morris Majestic Road (which may be the fanciest road name ever slapped on a backroad), this new facility is designed to give local entrepreneurs, artists, and business dreamers a shot at something more than just staring at a laptop in their kitchen while kids scream over Paw Patrol reruns.
Now, I’m not an expert, but here’s what we know. This building used to be owned by the Jefferson County Department of Health. They donated it to the City of Morris, and then Morris did what every good small town does: figured out how to make it work with about $110,000 and some grit.
They painted, polished, patched up the HVAC, and turned it into what Councilwoman Kathy Bolton calls a “dynamic hub for business, arts, and education.” That’s fancy talk for: if you have an idea and a pulse, we’ve got a table for you.
“We’re partnering with the North Jefferson Chamber and CARA,” said Bolton, “to help with training, networking, and resourcing small business owners.”
In other words, this isn’t just another building with inspirational quotes on the wall. This is a place where someone who fixes lawnmowers out of their garage or makes earrings in their basement can come figure out how to turn it into an actual business. Maybe even one with employees. And taxes. And forms. And coffee.
And that’s worth celebrating.
Sure, there wasn’t a marching band or a celebrity ribbon cutter. But there was a community, and some hard work, and an idea that people in this part of Jefferson County deserve the same shot as anyone else.
So whether you’re an entrepreneur, an artist, or just somebody trying to find a quiet place to open your laptop and pretend to work while watching ESPN highlights — the North Jefferson Innovation Center might just be your new favorite spot.
And to the folks who turned an old health department building into something people can actually use — well done. That's real innovation.
